What is an AI agent? Why BFSI should care.

An AI agent is a software program that can perceive its environment, make decisions, and take actions—often without a human reviewing every step. Unlike a chatbot that answers questions, an agent can autonomously execute tasks like processing transactions, querying databases, or calling APIs. In BFSI, agents could automate compliance checks, fraud detection, or customer service at scale. The catch: unsupervised agents can cause harm if they hallucinate, misinterpret rules, or escalate wrongly. Recent hacking and Microsoft warnings show agents are now both opportunity and risk.

WHY IT MATTERS

Mid-senior engineers and risk teams increasingly encounter 'AI agent' proposals in vendor pitches and internal AI roadmaps. Understanding the difference between agents (autonomous loops) and models (static predictions) is essential for security design, monitoring, and governance.
