What is a foundation model? Why BFSI teams talk about them constantly.
A foundation model is a large AI system trained on billions of words/data, then fine-tuned for specific tasks (fraud detection, customer service, compliance review). Think of it as a blank-slate expert who learns your bank's language and rules via examples. GPT-4, Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini are foundation models. BFSI adopted them because they reduce training time and improve performance on novel tasks without custom data labeling.
WHY IT MATTERS
Understanding foundation model architecture helps BFSI leaders assess vendor lock-in, data privacy risks (since models train on external data), and regulatory exposure. Regulators now ask: Is your LLM using my customer data to train itself?
