EMVCo proposes intent layer for agentic card payments to verify AI authorization at point of transaction
EMVCo, the global card-payment standards body, is developing technical standards for AI agents to make card payments. The 'intent layer' distinguishes between *can an agent pay* (existing credential check) and *should this particular transaction proceed* (new authorization logic).
WHY IT MATTERS
As autonomous agents handle commerce, payment networks need new guardrails beyond static card credentials. This standards move prevents fraud and unauthorized agent spending at scale.
