Open-weight AI models fail to dent demand for compute infrastructure
Despite proliferation of free, open-source large language models, demand for specialized AI hardware and cloud compute remains robust. Suppliers of chips and infrastructure—the "picks and shovels" of the AI boom—continue to see strong orders regardless of model licensing shifts.
WHY IT MATTERS
BFSI infrastructure teams relying on proprietary model APIs face lower switching costs than assumed; commodity open models don't reduce total compute spend, just licensing mix. Capex planning assumptions need revision.
