What is an AI agent? Why everyone is talking about them.

An AI agent is a software program that can perceive its environment, make decisions, take actions (like calling APIs or approving transactions), and adjust based on outcomes—without human approval for each step. Unlike chatbots that only respond to text, agents autonomously pursue multi-step goals (e.g., 'find and book the cheapest flight'). Freehand's procurement agents and WEX's fraud detectors are real examples: they automatically negotiate supplier rates and block fraud before you intervene.

WHY IT MATTERS

Agents shift AI from tool (you ask, it answers) to workforce (it acts). In BFSI, this means faster approvals, lower ops cost, but new compliance and bias risks requiring real-time audit trails.
