Four-year US central bank digital currency ban takes effect

A ban on Federal Reserve development of a US CBDC was set to become law on July 11, 2026, after Congress approved and sent it to President Trump. The prohibition lasts four years and blocks central bank direct issuance of digital currency to the public.

WHY IT MATTERS

Eliminates near-term threat of Fed-issued CBDC competing with private stablecoins and bank deposits. Reduces regulatory uncertainty for stablecoin consortiums (e.g., Open USD) but delays payments infrastructure modernization in a period when other G7 economies are advancing CBDC pilots.
