Alibaba and Ant pay $600M to settle DOJ illegal sales enforcement claims
Alibaba Group and AUS Merchant Services (Ant Group subsidiary) agreed to pay $600 million to settle US Justice Department allegations of failing to prevent illegal merchandise sales on Alibaba.com and AliExpress. DOJ alleged Alibaba enabled counterfeit goods, drugs, and controlled items.
WHY IT MATTERS
Record enforcement against payment facilitator (Ant unit); confirms DOJ willingness to fine major fintech platforms for inadequate seller vetting. BFSI and fintech KYC/AML controls on merchant platforms now face heightened compliance cost.
